Never installed a new template

Hey guys... just got my vB last week....

im trying to install a new style now, but im finding it all a little confusing and irritating.

I really think there should be a sticky post somewhere named 'New Style Tutorial' or whatever.

So anyways.... i tried downloading a style, and i get the xml and the dir of images...... but why would i upload the images to my forum root.... that would just overwrite all the base images that are there right now.... meaning that i wouldnt be able to go back to the way it was before i installed the style. Thats kinda stupid imo..... How would it be possible to have multiple styles on your board like this? So im thinking there HAS to be a better way of doing it.... such as a directory path such as \forum\style\01\whatever, \forum\style\02\whatever.....

Can somebody give me the general idea of what i am doing wrong?
