Titles and ranks best practice

Is there a rule of thumb or best practice for user ranks and user titles?

Ask the community, turn them off to discorage post whoring (I turned off post counts on forum game forum), keep them simple?

I still need to decide what the difference is between titles and ranks which allow grapgics and html words
