Default The Philosophy Thread

Seeing as there seems to be an overdose of vBulletin-related threads in this forum, I will get us back on topic

This thread is all about philosophy, and general questions that you are unsure about. I have one to start off:

Why does the term "nothing" exist? Technically if you are sat doing 'nothing' you aren't doing 'nothing', just lazing around. A black hole isn't 'nothing', it is just devoid of air. It isn't 'nothing'. Nothing does not exist, because there is always something.

So why does the word 'nothing' exist? Is it a term of convenience?

Yes - How would describe your lack of activity, for example - "I'm sitting around daydreaming of things and um, er, stuff" - It's easier to say "I'm sitting around, thinking about nothing in particular", or even easier is "I'm doing nothing"...

"Something" implies an active role in life or in a situation - While that may not be very descript, it does describe that you are doing "something" - "Nothing" implies that basically "nothing" of an important significance or value is occuring in life or in a situation

nothing is not a word of content, but a situation... we had to use some word to identify some situation where there was 1- no activity, 2- no content...

a black hole is for some a "nothing in space" but actually it is not "nothing", but the opposite of light... we always have opposites in life and in the universe... and no, women are not the opposite of men... the opposite destroy the one... women are not destroying men... (hopefully!)

Excellent. I'm going to go to hell, but I might as well show up at the burning gates with a copy of 'Fiesta' scrunched up in one hand and a can of Stella in the other.

Bring it on! :P
