Change Smilie Replacement Text

If I want to change the replacement text for a smilie without breaking the posts where it was used previously, do I have to do anything other than a search and replace of the post table?

So for example I have a smilie named uppy: that points to puppy.gif, and I want to change the replacement text to :dog: without breaking the posts where uppy: was used. Can I just change the smilie in the ACP and then search the post table for uppy: and replace it with :dog:?

If so, what would that query look like?
