Problems wrapping long lines - breaks long link URLs in post?

I've put the "Number of characters before wrapping" setting on my forum to 80 to stop stupidly long words from breaking the layout of my pages.

However that's adding a <BR> tag to long URLs, which is obviously stopping them from working.

The link text gets abrvtd () correctly with the three dots...
http://www. reaalllllllllllllllllll...ggggwebsite.com
but the actual HREF gets a "<br /%3" stuck in the middle of it
http://www. reaalllllllllllllllllllllllllllllllllllllllllyyyyy yyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyy<br /%3Eylllllllllllllloooooooooooooooooooooooonnnnnnnnnn nnnnnnnggggwebsite.com

any ideas on how to fix this?
