I'm an administrator over on KH-F, as a lot of you know, I'm sure, and on rare occasions, I will experience the oddest thing: I go to refresh the index and I'm hit with a database error, but then I refresh again and it loads.

That is basically saying mysql is restarting/died, ie why ur numbers get reset...
Yes, I know (I've asked about it before). However, like I said, it's like once in a blue moon, so I personally don't look at it as an issue. After all, a server is a computer, which is technology, and just like any other technological appliance, it can have its glitches.
Haha! You know, the funny thing is that users don't realize that the website is dealing with a computer - just like their own computer - and it occasionally takes a break from serving up the site. I have to tell them that servers need the occasional coffee break too.
You should talk to your host and arrange it so the crontab that handles the restarts does so when you and your members are less likely to notice it.... say 3-4 AM.
