how to stop email notifications for moderated posts or threads?

We have recently implemented a promotion system so that new registered users have their first couple of posts moderated, however it is causing a problem because even when a post is still in the moderation queue, users who subscribe to threads or forums are getting email notifications of the new new post.

These users then try to go to the new post and get an invalid link.

Is there a way to prevent these emails from going out until the post has been validated by the moderator?
