While the mods deliberate and conjecture and draft by-laws and lobby Congress, here's a radical idea...

How about reinstating the threads for, like a week or so, so the users who need information in them can save them to their hard drives? Install the Download Thread as PDF hack, and that'll make it super easy for interested parties to grab them in the meantime.
