although physicall sitemap files are store din vbseo_sitemap/data/ folder, you should submit http://yourforumsroot/sitemap_index.xml.gz.
It works using the rewrite rule entered in .htaccess (if you have hot-link protection .htaccess file already, you can add the rewrite rules for vBSEO Sitemap generator at the end of file).
