You can do this by using the conditions in templates en passing flashvars to your flashobject. We have something similair on our forum with no probs, just make sure you also pass the sessions (if any) to you flash object.

On a big board you have to consider; the loading of an activex plugin can slow down the overall clientside loading of a webpage, and always include a alternate image for people that don't have the flash plugin installed (that is if you decide to replace the standard navbar completely).
