It's a nice idea, but it has some rather large drawbacks:

1) If lots of people decide to mail their friends at the same time, your server is really going to feel the strain.

2) This is an open invitation to use your server's email system as a spam gateway. Any script kiddie could put together a little script that could send thousands of emails using your server, without even being on the boards... badness...
