I'm looking for a way to do the same thing, I think.
Replacing the forum title text with a graphic.

Looks like $vbphrase[title] is the place to start, or maybe the forumhome_forumbit_level1_nopost template, or maybe both(?). Seems like there was a way to do this in the past, but I never messed with it.

Edit:

I swear I just look stupid posting around here... Always figure it out five minutes after clicking submit.

In the control panel, under forum manager, the "forum name" field allows HTML. Just replace the text name with full url img src code.
