I think they restricted the usage of - for username since that character is being used to seperate words or links and url parts.

But does it work when you do www.yoursite.com/username ? Does it atleast function right (regardless of what characters it uses), or does it mess up?

Also, i'd say to just not allow them to use "-" at all if it's a problem.
