It depends on one's philosophy. If you want points to be rewards for contributions to your forums, then you are cheating those who contribute by allowing others to just buy points. Which will result in less useful contributions to your forum, while it may give you some revenue from selling points. In the end forum content will always outperform whatever small cash you make from selling points. If you lose quality content, then users may lose interest, ad revenue will go down, etc etc.

Of course it's all situational, but just as you are certain that everyone would install a "purchase points" system, I am equally certain that many would rather not.
