I too can't believe this isn't a default feature in vBulletin by now. I've been requesting it since 2.0.3 =(

I would gladly "donate" to anyone who can develop a bug-free mod that:

Allows remotely hosted avatars
Allow the remote avatars to be hidden with the regular avatars
Checks file size and dimensions of the remote avatar before accepting it

The first two features are manditory, but the third would be very, very appreciated.
