1) There are seperate systems that allow you to add points values to posts and threads in vBulletins - There are many modifications here that can be used - They would possibly need slight modification further to trade for real items, but that would be easy enough

2) There are several "latest threads" hacks available

3) There are a few SEO hacks out which you could combine into 2) to make them search engine friendly
