It's close to what I want but not quite.

I'll have to toy with I think the preg replace.

That way those that aren't in a usergroup that can view those smilies just see %%%%% instead of the image.

The hack you linked just won't show the smilies in the popup but if they know the replace text it'll still parse for them, so it's close, but not quite.
