If they are really deleted (which should, as said, not be possible) you can simply re-import the XML to get them back.
The commetns show up blank simply because they are blank.

I'm a bit late in replying, but yes.. it was indeed the templates from the other styles which I hadn't reverted since using the journal a year ago
