In saying all that, VBMS was a whole heck of a lot more tightly integrated, at least style-wise, with vB. HM doesn't give a toss about your existing Usergroups by default...they sign up and you have to manually shift them into an HM Usergroup.
It also has a fun little bug whereby if you are using the standard vB "integration" (what a joke that is), your members won't be prompted to enter much of the info...leaving you unable to change their accounts at all, because they have no Secret Question.
You also don't get notified of new users etc.
