I disabled plugins and found that there was still a problem. Now, if I moved a user normaly to moderator, there was no problem. So it seems like it has to do with this hack.

Here is a way to reproduce:
1) make a usergroup a moderator group
2) add a user to that group
3) go view a showthread page.
