In answer to my own question ... I read the FAQ.txt which comes with the download

Question: The Arcade works perfectly with my main style, but all my other
forums styles result in blank pages, why?

Answer: The installation script only installs templates to the style that
you're using at the time of the installation. It's simple to change.


In admincp/install_arcade.php
FIND:
__________________________________________________ _____
$styleid=$vboptions['styleid'];
__________________________________________________ _____

REPLACE THIS WITH:
__________________________________________________ _____
$styleid=X;
__________________________________________________ _____


everything seems in working order now
