Speaking for myself, whenever I install a new hack, I look at how it works so that I can try to understand what the code means. About a year ago, I had no clue what a parse error on line 255 meant, but now I not only know what it is, I know usually how to fix it. Largely because I joined this community and gained knowledge from taking part in conversations and installing hacks.
