There are free styles here that may suit your needs but if you want your site to stand out you should have a custom style imho.
The best way ofcourse is to learn how to do so yourself, which requires at least experance is photoshop or other such program and knowalge of xhtml. CSS and javascript is you want to get more advanced.
Short of that there are many that do custom work, but they do charge a lot of an entire re-style of the board.
My advice is if you want to start cheap see if you can find someone to do a custom header/footer for you, then have them set up the settings for colors in vBulletin to match the new header/footer. This will allow you to have something semi-custom and won't cost as much, and while it will retain the stock vB layout outside of the header and footer it will get the job done.
If you ever wanted to customize other templates there are many 'template modifications' around here that you can use, installing these will teach you a bit of code to and in time you'll be able to write your own template modifications.
