I have input all the other code up to stage 4 and when i overwrite the new function.php with the old one it works. I have also read you FAQ's about this error, however it is not a problem in Dreamweaver as i have unchecked the 3 boxes and have also edited it in notepad and wordpad and it still does not work.

Any ideas?

Just make sure you do the functions.php edit correctly. You might not be copying all of the needed code.
