I have advocated something similar for a while...I nicked the way XMB do it and have run my 3.0.7 board like this for some time:

My method simply involved using a similar graphic but placed in a new column on the right hand side of the board. This does involve messing about with the conditionals for the mod column but it's not too much trouble.
