Has anyone attempted to split the post table?

I've got 2 different sections in my forum that I'd like to run from different post tables, as one is VERY large and not very active, whilst one is small and active. It has the effect of slowing both down, but if I could move the big stuff out I can have the best of both worlds.

Am I mad to even think this is possible?
