Well, I found a work around - the replacement variables editor.
Code:
Find: images/icons/
Replace with: images/icons/directory
the directory should contain the post icons for that particular style. Of course you can name the directory whatever you like.

I tried this but couldn't get it to work. I get broken links where the icons should be, and all default icons are trying to load anyway. My seperate forums are child forums though, do I need to create completely different styles rather than child styles for this to work?
Also, do I still need to load the icons into via the icon manager? When I do this it just adds the icons into the orginal choices.
I have also installed the
Filter threads by post icon hack. Could this be messing something up? Two templates in that hack were altered, forumsdisplay and threadbit, and also one file; forumsdisplay.php
Any ideas?
