One key benefit to this hack is that it means your new articles do get put in new posts and searches which means that your site content is better coupled and more intuitive for users.

As far as your import woe - I agree with Samir - it does sound like a premission problem - however I would have to look into it.
The import process really only takes about 30 seconds. Why not just enable them - run the importer - then hide them again? Seems the quickest solution.

Even making the forum unhidden, it still didn't show up in the import list. Not sure what was up with that.

When it comes down to it if I end up using the hack, there would be one forum of actual articles that I would want to show up in New posts and be searchable. But the other forum (and the one that is set up now that I want to import) is not actually articles but stories, and I wouldn't have that forum be searchable, nor do I want those to show up in New Posts.

At any rate, a stupid mistake on my part during the installation screwed up a bunch of other stuff, so I ended up uninstalling it and fixing everything else last night. At some point in the future I will try it again.
