Thats because all images should be uploaded to gas/images thats how it was coded. To try and chage where the images are uploaded to may be more hassle than its worth. Why do you want to avoid the gas/images/ folder? That is why you are having the problems you mentioned earlier.

Do you mean postbit? GAS uses GAS_article_pb or GAS_comment_PB instead of postbit.
If you mean newthread or editthread... then test for $GAS_setting[is_article]
