I'm looking for this type of functionality too.

It's too bad that a search for "first post in thread be different" gets reduced too "post, thread" by the vbulletin.org search settings.

I found this hack:

But this uses a lot of custom DB code, which isn't "template changes mostly and the use of template conditionals.".
