With template mods, subforums and a bit of planning I really think you can get exactly what you are looking for - a central blog that you select the content for - without any hacking required.

Basically, you would create a forum specific style and apply that style to your main blog forum. Then, your subforums would serve as your topics. You don't have to display the Blog Forums on your forum home if you don't want to.

We had a whole emagazine running this way for quite a while and it worked very nicely for us. The problem with hacks is that you have to reinstall most of them whenever you upgrade your forum. With template mods, you stand a very good chance of not having to do anything to your blogs when you upgrade. At most, you'll have to edit in a template change or two if a vbulletin template that you use changes drastically.
