When you edit the article from your admincp, does the path for the image show in the article text like: <img src="http://www.yoursite.com/forum/images/articles//3/2.jpg">?

If so, upload your new image to the article sub-folder, (3 in the above example) then delete the temp image (2.jpg above) and replace it with your new uploaded image, save and your new image should replace the temp one.
