On a related topic, many of our users have to access the site from remote locations where modem is their only option. We were seeing long download times for our most common operation -- displaying posts.
Linear mode outputs the smallest pages, then Hybrid, and the biggest pages were for Threaded. We had our Linear/Hybrid users reduce the number of posts to display per page. For our Threaded users, we reduced "Threaded Mode: Maximum Cached Posts" to a very small number (I do not recall exactly.)
As an example, take this thread from vb.com:
http://www.vbulletin.com/forum/showt...?t=95657&pp=10
* 10 posts per page setting in effect for Linear or Hybrid
* stylesheet was inline, 5133 chars
* show similar threads was on
* 43,467 bytes for the 10 postbits in Linear or Hybrid
Page sizes:
Linear: 85,207
Hybrid: 94,484
Threaded: 113,412 (Threaded had 13 cached posts in page.)
Your mileage may vary, but you get the idea. Those are big pages when you are using a modem.
