Hey first of all welcome to the great community that is vBulletin.org. I myself used to be a Zelda fanatic, and now faced with the problem of time I still enjoy to get into the odd hour or so of Zelda if I can.
TheLegendofLink.com is a good name, explains exactly what it is and a very good search target with the right care, and time I can see this site being very popular. Since you are new a little bit of advice it will take time (you probably already know this) it seems like a good idea, and just keep pushing forward.
If you wish to learn a bit more about web development check out
SitePoint.com by far the best resource I know for web development information, tutorials and good daily reads especailly if you plan to be in this field for awhile. Also check out the
SitePointForums alot of the people there can help you with the webdevelopment aspect of your site, including new technologies such as xml, xhtml, and programming our own vBulletin uses, so you can get familiar with the coding structure of vBulletin

and maybe release hacks one day.
Also there are a couple of RPG hacks as you described released for the version 2 of vBulletin including stores where people can buy items and can battle, you can easily modify the items that come along and add your own images. For vB3 I am not 100% sure if there are any RPG-based hacks released that are bug-free and user-friendly (keeping in mind that you are new to this area).
Anyways welcome, and good luck and you can be sure I will join
Edit
There has been a large request for the RPG hack keep your eye on the
vB3 Beta Releases forum for early beta releases most of the RPG hacks due to the large size of them are released there before final release.
