Most likely that book was written before php 4.3.x or 4.0.x it really depends on when it was made. For the majority, it wouldn't affect php5 betweenn 4.3 and Up, due to the fact Php 5 is an internal rewrite for the most part, just introducing private/public OOP on teh outside and misc other enhancements, all the functions are from 4.3.x+ though.

They have added certain functions to php5, so I doubt that book was written just for it.
