Thomas, rpms t3h sux :P, you hit about 10billion dependancies if you ever want to install an rpm on your own. it's slow, annoying, and pointless. Portage makes life much easier with the ability for extreme custimization.
I used redhat as I was starting out on linux for 2 years, it was nice, did everythign for you, but back in 7.x it still left some room for cli configuration, when 8 came out, I installed it, was disgusted, and moved on. Gentoo just gave me much more flexability. plus why would I want to sit around waiting for precompiled releases of programs when I can just grab the source and use my own cflags to make it run faster for my architecture?
