this is not really a hack.. it is a template edit only.

In your FORUMHOME template remove the <table> and </table> tags that surround the $forumbits

forumhome_forumbit_level1_nopost add that <table> at the beggining and a </table><br/> at the end (assumming you use categories as everyone else).

That's all you need. Now you have spaces between categories. Spaces between individual forums would be something very similar.
