Exclude members of certain usergroups from the registered users-number?

Let's say I have set up one usergroup for inactive users, one for banned users etc.

Is it possible to make some changes so that the number of members on the index-page only shows the number of active members?

So that if there's 121 registered members, but 20 of those are in the inactive-group and 1 is in the banned-group, the index would say that the board has 100 members.
