I whole-heartedly disagree. The popup is an instant alert that is on this site. It's very useful. Especially when a person goes directly to 'view new posts' instead of checking the site or forumhome. I don't want to rely on checking my email just to see I have a new private message. Not that this is a stupor-important issue, but it's definately not obselete. Relying on email for an instant notification is rather ludicrous, no?
