However, I see you miss out on some functionality with this. Is it possible to add some of the missing functions such as inserting images, php code, quotes, etc.?

I also don't like that the submit new thread/preview new thread buttons display submit new post/preview new post even if you are creating a thread.

Those are all just template modifications. If you want to add in or take away a button, just delete that portion of the code from the template.
