I hacked a mod to the Apache Authorization (mod_auth_mysql) to have it use the same username and passwords (and group) that VBulletin creates... (Vbulletin uses md5 encryption and the base mod uses crypt encryption).

I'm running it on the same machine but (theoretically) it should work on different servers (you'd need the mysql client on the gallery machine).

If this makes sense to you, I'll send you my hack and basic instructions... I'm sorry, but I not going to be able to provide any additional support.
