As I said...it's only questionable....but....

Since PhPportal is based on a GPL licensed product that too must be GPL...which they are and you can download the product completely free and without cost.

However. According to their site:

"Official support, addons and themes are limited to the phpPortals supporting members forums." for which you have to pay.

All these addons and themes, since they may (and may not be), using code that is at least in part derived from a GPL (GNU) licensed product, they too must be freely available and easy to get without having to pay a fee to acquire. As far as I understand the laws governing GPL is that only original code made for a GPL product can be sold in any way and if the code is derived from GPL it too must be GPL.

So my feeling about it...and I could be off base here...is that they are allowing to you to download a GPL product then tell you that you have to pay to get other parts of the GPL product.

Of course I could be wrong about whether the addons and themes are even partly derived from PhPportal but the only way for me to know is to pay to get in to their forums. Kind of ironic isn't it?
