With regards to your first question, why not have 2 styles for your members, 1 with default templateset that shows no hacks, and the other the custom templateset that shows the hacks. This way you use the same board, but with 1 style that is standard vB and the other style with the "bells and whistles". Just a suggestion (I'm sure you've thought of this - I may be misunderstanding your intentions).
