Officials Say School Lockdowns Will Continue

7:08 p.m. EDT October 9, 2002 - Generally on days such as this in Momtgomery County, Md., after-school and athletic events would go on as scheduled. But because of safety concerns since the sniper attacks, school officials canceled all indoor and outdoor athletic events. All extra-curricular activities were also canceled.



But, indoor public activities such as team practices or meetings will go on as scheduled Wednesday evening in county school buildings.
School officials in Prince George's County, Md., said that they will remain in a "Code Blue" status, at least through Friday. Iris Metts, the school's chief operating officer, said that plans are in the works to ease the restrictions.

In Fairfax County, Va., school officials also canceled all outdoor activities that couldn't be moved inside. But for the first time in days they did allow field trips.

Meanwhile in Prince William County, Va., officials made a decision Wednesday to end the lockdown. Students were allowed outside for recess and school officials said sports events will go on as planned this weekend.

Despite allowing field trips, officials said all trips to the District of Columbia and Maryland are off.

They also said parents will be allowed to request that their children be kept inside.

School officials in the District told News4, the following arrangements are in effect "until further notice."

All outdoor activities including recess, field trips, and open lunch have been canceled and all after-school outdoor interscholastic sports and activities are canceled.

However, officials are re-evaluating that decision, especially in light of homecoming this weekend. Officials said that all indoor activities may continue.
