Sources: Searchers Find Tarot Card Near Middle School
7:03 p.m. EDT October 9, 2002 - Unnamed sources close to the sniper investigation said that searchers found a shell casing and a tarot card in a wooded area near the Benjamin Tasker Middle School Monday.
Shortly after the 13-year-old middle school student was shot and wounded Monday morning, investigators determined that the sniper fired the shot from a nearby wooded area.
Montgomery County police recruits were sent to help conduct a grid search of those woods. Sources told News4 the recruits found a shell casing that investigators believe is linked to the shooting.
And sources close to the investigation said the searchers found a tarot card, the type of card some people use to forecast the future.
Sources said the card found was called the death card, and on that card was a message authorities believed was written by the sniper. It read, "Dear policeman, I am God."
News reports of those discoveries reportedly upset some of the investigators on the case. Montgomery County Police Chief Charles Moose said he may now have to re-evaluate how information on the case is handled.
"In regards to my concern about the card and its ability or inability to mess up the investigation, my investigators made a clear and compelling argument that that information not be released. I think I'm obligated to listen to them," Moose said.
In the last week, police believe the sniper has snot nine times, killing six people and seriously wounding two others. People throughout the area have been nervous since then. Police responded with guns drawn Wednesday to a report of a strange laser-type light near the Wheaton Regional Park, in Wheaton, Md., but nothing was found.
And later Wednesday in the Fort Washington section of Prince George's County, Md., police searched a wooded area for about six hours after a witness called police and said she saw a man with a long black bag entering the woods.
Scores of law enforcement officers responded to the scene, but in the end nothing was found.
A reward leading to an arrest and conviction in the sniper case has grown to $237,000.
