It has come to my attention after browsing several forums that some are more successful than others to obtain large memberships. I.E. 19000 members?

How can other forums achieve large memberships? What's the key? Just looking to hear what people's thoughts and ideas on achieving this are?

With ours we're currently just over 300+ members and I want to get to well over 1000 but trying to keep members coming back I believe is always a challenge.

Is it because people are asked for too much information when signing up? Should a reg form simply be:

Username
Email Address
Location
Avatar

?

Thoughts?
