make sure you don't have multiple <br>'s there

as for your questions...
  1. you can edit that in the priv_sendprivmsg template.
  2. not possible without some hacking...
  3. i'd suggest copying your postbit code into the pm template, then click "view default template" to see what variables you need to change.
