If pms are deleted by anyway (by the user, by you, via admin cp, via phpmyadmin etc.), no you cant get them back. Vb uses SQL DELETE command to delete the pms from db and once they are deleted, they are gone forever. In case he cant manage to list them properly and think he deleted them, you better login to his account and see if they are really deleted.

And another way to access the PMs is search database and see if the pms is kept in sender's outbox. Even if the receiver deleted it, the sender might be still keeping them and you can access them until he deletes.

Run this SQL query to list them:
SELECT * FROM privatemessage where touserid=X

Replace X with his userid. This will list all the pms sent to him (regardless of whom) if the sender still keeps them in his own pm box.
