The BB Codes in vBulletin are entered in via the admincp, from there you can use {param}/{option} values to make BB Codes display differently when different values are entered in (or a different video on a video player bb code etc).

I may not be understanding your question but it sounds like you're not used to how vBulletin handles BB Codes as opposed to Xenforo? When you create a BB Code in vBulletin it replies on the tags to display properly using a find/replace per say i.e. [MYBBCODE1]Parameter or Value[/MYBBCODE1] then that is read in the post and converted into a BB Code so the tags [before]AND[/after] are actually required. You can bypass not being required to type in the bbcode prefix and suffix brackets by adding these bbcodes to the editor, then you could use the custom bb codes by simply clicking an icon (it will still use the tags [] though).
