There is always one version of vBulletin available to download, so don't worry about that. At the moment this version is 2.2.5, but 2.2.6 is due to be released next week.

When someone changes the original code of vBulletin, it's a hack. Hackers release these changes, with full instructions on how to install. Currently there are 903 hacks released on this site -- lots to choose from.
